The speed restrictions on the N-Ring Nordschleife were removed March 30, 2016. Restrictions (between 200 and 250 km/hr) were imposed March 2015 following an accident which resulted in the fatality of a bystander.
Some repaving, and the addition of more protective fences, has led to a declaration that the Nordschleife is safe again.
The 2016 season’s first VLN* race took place on April 2, 2016 without speed restrictions.
VLN Endurance Championship (Langstreckenmeisterschaft) has begun its 40th season involving 10 races in 2016. The next event is April 30.
*VLN stands for—brace yourself— Veranstaltergemeinschaft Langstreckenpokal Nürburgring. The Nurburgring Endurance Cup is organized by an association of car clubs with each hosting one event of a ten-race series held at the N-Ring. Participants range from amateurs in small road-legal cars (with roll-cages and harnesses) to professional factory teams fielding specific ‘racing cars’.
Closely linked to the 24 Hours Nurburgring, the rules are similar and usually the same racers participate.
