Is the RXC Turbo 500 being Prepped for Nurburgring?

When people think of companies that hold the current Nurburgring lap record for street-legal cars, their minds often turn to Porsche or McLaren. However, the reality is Radical is in the lead. It not only hit a 6 minute and 55 second lap time in 2005, it bumped up the ante in 2009 with a 6 minute and 48 second time—the first with an SR8 and the second with an SR8 LM.

Now Radical has a new model in play as its flagship: the RXC Turbo 500. This is an upgrade of the original RXC model, which possessed 450 horsepower and sported a 3.5-litre EcoBoost V6. Now Radical claims the RXC Turbo 500 has an engine that provides 530 horsepower and 481 lb-ft of torque. It also states this new model can hit 0 – 100 mph in 6.8 seconds.

August is the company’s planned date to tackle Nordschleife again with the RXC Turbo 500, hoping to blast past their previous records. Until then, it will undergo a variety of driving sessions with several different tire sets (all of Dunlop make)

Phil Abbott, Radical’s founder and Managing Director, had this to say about the upgrade: “Our outstanding technical team wanted to deliver something really special in the RXC Turbo 500, and I think they’ve definitely moved the game on. The partnership between the RXC’s accessible aerodynamics and grip, and the ballistic performance of the Turbo 500’s high-performance Ford EcoBoost powerplant delivers an intoxicating, spectacular driving experience like no other road car.”

One of the big questions, though, is whether the RXC Turbo 500 and other Radical models qualify as truly street legal. There are several countries in which the models are considered street legal by technicality only. As buyers wait to see how the RXC Turbo 500 will perform, current owners of the RXC Turbo can purchase an EcoBoost upgrade kit.
